Asian Studies MA Student Awarded Prestigious Critical Language Scholoarship

Julia Beabout was awarded the U.S. Department of State's Critical Language Scholarship for Summer 2012. The program is sponsored by the Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and provides full-immersion in accelerated language training in languages deemed critical to the United States. She was given the opportunity to study Mandarin Chinese at Shaanxi Normal University (SNU) in Xi’an, China. For her thesis, she is also researching contemporary commemorative images and presentations of Song Qingling, who was the widow of Sun Yat-sen and is referred to as the “Mother of China.”
