Southern Japan Seminar
The annual Southern Japan Seminar (SJS) promotes research and educational activities of Japan-related scholars in the Southeastern United States. This year’s event was held in Florida International University’s MMC Campus in GC 150 on Saturday, February 23, 2013.

Fu Foundation Scholarship 2013
We are pleased to announce this year’s Fu Foundation Scholarship for travel studies in Asia. Funding is available up to $500 for Summer and Fall Semesters. Deadline to apply is April 30th, 2013.

Japanese Speech Contest Student Winners Recognized by the Consul General of Japan in Miami
Three FIU students that won the 2013 Japanese Speech & Skit Contest, organized by the Association for Florida Teachers of Japanese (AFTJ), were recognized by the Consul General of Japan in Miami, Mr. Eiichi Kawahara, and invited to his residence to celebrate their achievement on May 1, 2013.
Two Asian Studies Students Recognized as "Worlds Ahead Graduates": Karen Cespedes and Sky Choi
Asian Studies M.A. student Karen Cespedes and B.A. student Sebastian "Sky" Choi (the youngest student ever to graduate from FIU at age 16!) were both recognized by President Mark Rosenberg as “Worlds Ahead Graduates” at commencement for Spring 2013.

Asian Studies Program receives the Japan Foundation's Institutional Project Support Program Grant
The Asian Studies Program has received an Institutional Project Support Program Grant from the Japan Foundation, for a collaborative project called "The South Florida Partnership in Japanese Studies (SFPJS) Housed at FIU." This project lasting from 2013-2017 will greatly enhance knowledge and critical analysis of Japanese history and culture through developing an interdisciplinary curriculum and supporting a multi-institutional consortium for promoting research, teaching, and outreach.

For everyone interested in Korea, the Asian Studies Program now has a Korean Club. The club is currently raising money for two speakers, EatYourKimchi, to speak at FIU and raise Korean culture awareness.
