The Southern Japan Seminar was held on March 7th, 2014 from 9:45 to 3:00 pm at the MARC Pavilion with a turnout of over 200 students.
The Southern Japan Seminar (SJS) promotes the research and educational activities of Japan-related scholars in the Southeastern United States. Drawing upon the strengths and needs of regional Japan studies, SJS fosters critical inquiry, multi-disciplinary discussion, and the dissemination of knowledge, concerning all Japan-related topics, both theoretical and practical.
The lectures were given by professors, associate professors and doctoral students from various universities, and were followed by a response from FIU's Asian Studies faculty and students. Topics covered during the conference included Confucian influences on Japanese societies and values, Japanese literature and culture, and Japanese philosophy.
This year's SJS event was supported by the Japan Foundation Institutional Project Support Grant.
